Organizational Learning

Organizational learning, which is akin to teamwork but examines the organizational level above work teams, is another occupational skill that requires some attention. Linda Argote, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University who specializes in industrial and organizational psychology, has studied extensively not just how individuals learn, but also how organizations learn.a

Organizational learning can have a dramatic effect on cutting production and service costs and improving quality and timeliness—which makes it an important issue for businesses. Organizations vary widely in their learning rates: some learn quickly, significantly improving their productivity, while others learn more slowly. Different teams and parts of an organization can vary in their learning speed.

Argote has identified four factors that affect rates of organizational learning:

• Individual training skills, which can affect the combined learning of the group

• Developing transactive memory—that is, identifying who on a team knows how to perform the needed tasks, which allows both specialization and sharing of know-how

• Using technology effectively, since new technologies can speed progress on the production learning curve

• Knowledge transfer, through which one part or team in a company learns from another
